Comics artist Maria Stoian dips into autobiographical narrative with her work in progress, Forgeries. Maria explores her relationship with her late father, Alex; traversing his life, illness and death, the process of her own coming out, her grief, and the way art has always tied them together.

This exhibition presents the beginnings of a graphic novel in sketches, comic vignettes, notes, and drawings. Through her sequential recreations of memories and oil pastel studies of Alex’s paintings – themselves studies of other artworks – Maria tests the space between original and facsimile. This as-yet unresolved work is presented in pieces, in both their original form and riso prints.

Supported by Creative Scotland and mentor Kate Charlesworth.
